If you're moving with kids, chances are you're feeling a little overwhelmed. I get it — I've been there, lived it, and moved through it with three amazing kids (now 22, 18, and 5 years old). That's exactly why I created the free Moving with Kids Guide on MTRNL.com — because sometimes you need real advice from someone who's walked that road.
Here are a few heartfelt tips I can share from experience to make your move less stressful and more empowering for you and your little ones.
There's no one-size-fits-all answer. Every family is different. Some kids thrive with lots of advanced notice; others may do better with shorter timelines to avoid anxiety buildup. You know your children best. Trust your instincts — and communicate with honesty and positivity.
Even if you're renting, letting your kids explore potential homes can build excitement. They'll find "secret" closets, envision their bedrooms, and imagine new adventures. Tip: Limit long showing days with young kids to one or two homes at a time to avoid overwhelm.
If you view the move as something happening to you, your kids will pick up on the fear or resentment. Shift your mindset to see it happening for you — as an exciting opportunity. Kids mirror our emotions more than our words.
I can't stress this enough: if you can, hire movers! Best investment I ever made as a single mom. It took what could have been days of stress and condensed it into just a few hours. It was worth every penny — and made the transition so much easier for my family.
If possible, set up your new home before your kids arrive. Familiar spaces help reduce fear. Research local parks, daycares, and schools ahead of time too — knowing what’s nearby brings comfort.
One of my secret weapons? Frequency music during moves. It helped calm my kids (and me) during drives, transitions, and even while unpacking. Message me if you want our go-to list!
Before you even pack a box, list the things you're grateful for. This energetic shift can turn the most chaotic moves into magical new beginnings. Kids feel that.
